I'm reading Dogtag Summer by Elizabeth Partridge. I'm really interested in finding out what actually happened to Tracy when she was a small girl in Vietnam and what happened to her Vietnamese family. Right now the author is giving little hints about Tracy's life in Vietnam before she was taken to America to be adopted. I think her adoptive father might have some connection to her GI father. At the beginning of the book, Tracy discovers her biological father's dogtags and she begins to wonder about her life in Vietnam.

I just finished Tighter by Adele Griffin. The book is about a girl, Jamie, with several problems that she just can't seem to deal with unless she pops a few pills. Her mother thinks she has the perfect solution for her melancholy ways, ship her off for the summer to work as an au pair for her rich ex-boyfriend's daughter. She only incurs more troubles, however, in the form of Milo, the older brother of her charge, the ghosts of the former au pair and her boyfriend, and the intrusive housekeeper. OR are things really as they seem to Jamie?

Caretaker Series

I have recently read the Caretaker series which is about a teenage boy named Jack who gets his world turned upside down and inside out. He goes to a regular high school, lives in a regular town, and has a regular life as the football teams’ star quarterback. Then one night after he made the record for most yards rushed in one game, a strange man finds him. Jack doesn’t think anything of it but when he gets home his dad asks him if anything strange had happened and Jack decides to tell him and his dad tells him to get in the car, that they have to leave. Just then a strange creature starts to follow them. They get to a harbor and Jack's dad tells him to get in a boat, but when Jack won't leave his dad to fight off the enemy by himself, his dad shoots himself in the foot to make him leave. His father has just told him that Jack is the Beacon of Hope, Jack is from the future, and that he doen’t know his real family. What will be held in store for Jack? I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a sister that one day was normal and then the next has a mental breakdown. Stop Pretending: When My Big Sister Went Crazy is a really good book about a girl who’s sister has a mental breakdown and has to live at a mental hospital.This book is in Cookie’s, the younger sister's, point of view. The book consists of many poems making up the story.

It talks about the younger sister’s visits to the hospital and how her family is dealing with the situation. The sisters were very close until the older one broke down. The family can only visit the older sister for an hour on Sundays. It would be hard to have to go throughout the day knowing that your sister is not like she used to be. One of the hardest parts would be telling your friends. They might accept it, or they will turn their backs on you.
I liked this book because it is very inspirational for girls that have to deal with situations like this. The book teaches you to keep your head up in tough situations. I also liked the way the author made the book in poem form.

A book I read this year is I Am Number Four. The book is about 9 kids from the planet Lorien. They are being chased by Mogadorians, which is the species that lives on a different planet. Their planet was slowly dying off because of pollution and other things, so they decided to wage a war on Lorien ands steal their planet. The Loriens sent the 9 special kids with powers to Earth to hide and develop their powers so that they could fight back and rebuild their species. 3 have been killed. 4 is next. So far he is staying hidden moving from state to state. He is staying in small towns and hiding out in rural homes and staying quiet at school. That all changes when he gets to Paradise, Ohio. There he meets a bully named Mark. Mark is a football star, the sheriffs’ dad, and a real pain in Number Four.. John Smith’s butt. One day John is so fed up that he almost fights Mark and reveals his superhuman strength and speed. Then, he remembers he has to stay low and instead, he bails. His hands start to glow... his first real power is being revealed. Can he survive the coming war, bullies, girls, and worst of all.. high school?!?

I am Third by Gale Sayers is a book about a great Chicago Bears running back named Gale Sayers. It is a great book. This book is about Gale Sayers view on life, his Career as a running back ,his struggle to overcome his knee injury, and his short friendship with Brian Piccolo. This book was the basis for movie Brian's Song which was the story about Gale Sayers friend Brian Piccolo who died of cancer. "The Lord is first, my friends are second, and I am third." This is his inspiration; the guidelines for the way he lives. Gale Sayers grew up in the ghetto in Omaha with a tough life but he and his brother were always great at football. He had many adventures along the way but ended up playing in college and then becoming a star Bears running back. He did this because of his great work ethic and determination. He even managed to overcome a knee injury that would have ended most people's careers. Gale Sayers was one of the best running backs of all time and the best of his time and this is his inspirational story. Overall this is a great autobiography.

The book Gym Candy is a great story of how just a few bad choices can ruin your life. Mick Johnson has been a star running back for as long as he could remember. He has been unstoppable until he is in eighth grade and plays for the varsity. When he is leading a comeback in the game and is about win, he gets stopped at the 1 yard-line. It is fourth down and he gets the ball. He runs his hardest but is stopped by a lineman. He loses the game. Realizing that he needs to get stronger, he starts lifting weights. However, lifting at the school seems to do nothing for him and soon, he gets a trainer at a private gym. This trainer offers him a week's worth of steroids just to try them, not get into them. How can he resist being bigger, faster, and stronger? He gives in. This decision changes him and destroys a big part of his life.

My book is about two people's journey while being chased by an evil person. The two characters are very unexpected companions, one being a king's son, another a sea captain's daughter. The two embark on a quest to learn about their powers. It all starts when the king's son is being sent overseas to his father and he is attacked by a dragon called Torment. The king’s son and the ship owner's daughter are the only two known survivors of the ship. They embark on a quest to figure out their powers. Will they find anyone else from the crew, is there any way to stop the person who summoned the dragon? Read the book to find out.

A book I read this year is Where the Red Fern Grows. This story is about a boy named Billy that lives in the Ozark Mountains on a little family farm. His whole life he wanted two coon hounds, but his family was too poor and could not afford to buy him any dogs. He wanted them so badly that he started doing jobs around the country to save up enough money to buy the coon hounds that he wanted for so long. After working for a few years, he saved up enough money to buy the coon hounds. He went to his grandpa’s shop and had his grandpa send in the money. Billy had no way of getting to the hounds because the company could not send the pups in the mail. He decided not to tell his parents about buying the coon hounds until he got them. He walked to the town where the dogs were and brings them back. After he got the dogs he would go coon hunting almost everyday. Billy would skin every coon he would catch and give all the skins to his grandpa for him to sell at his store in the city. They go hunting many times and face many deaths of people they knew.

The Power of Six is a great sequel to I am Number Four. It tells more of another number from the planet of Lorian. Number 10 is also reveled as a big character in the novel. Number six is also reveled in this book. We learn a lot from Jon in the book, too. He opens his legacy chest and what's inside is a mystery all its own. The mogs. or mongdigorians are coming to earth to take it over. They want the planet and all that is stopping them is the numbers. They are the last hope; they are the salvation and they are what could bring doom or freedom to the planet. Will they save or destroy the world? You decide after reading this epic novel. This book towards the end leaves you grasping for more as you are stuck without a clue wondering what could happen next. This book solves a lot of things from I am Number Four and you will be pleased with what this book brings to the table. Overall, this book written by Picttus Lore is a great book and you will be glad you read it.

Shiver is a great, fast read about a teenage girl and her boyfriend who’s a werewolf human named Sam and their lives as Sam deals with trying not to change into a werewolf while fighting with his adoptive dad multiple times and Grace’s anger at not being able to change into a werewolf after she was almost able to as a young child. Sam and Grace face a lot of challenges as they live together in Grace's house and hide from her parents.. The book has a lot of flash backs from Grace's life when she was younger and Sam's younger life as a werewolf. Sam was a wolf and Grace used to sadly watch the wolves in the woods at night and long to be one of them. She always felt she didn't belong, and she knew she was meant to be one of the Mercy Falls wolves . Sam always wanted Grace to be a wolf too because he felt that she was supposed to be a wolf because she had the wolves eyes and the actions the wolves had. Grace also can smell, see, and hear as well as any of the wolves who shift every year. Sam and Grace love each other and they love the other wolves so they are definitely going to work to fix all the wolf pack problems. This story is about their wonderful times together as they both try to live through there problems and work them out.

Book Review

A book I have recently read is called The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The story starts off with what is called the reaping. At the reaping two people from all twelve districts are chosen. (one girl and one boy.) Katniss, the main character, had the difficult time of seeing her little sister chosen, so she decided to volunteer to take her spot in the Hunger Games. She is from District 12. Peeta is the male participant for the Hunger Games from district 12. In all there are 24 people that will battle it out for the glory of winning the Hunger Games. Peeta has fallen in love with Katniss during the whole Hunger Games. They decide that they should work together to try and bring home the win. Since the two people are “in love” they soon become nicknamed the star crossed lovers. All the competitors have to overcome many injuries and obstacles. At first only one person could live and go home to their beloved family, but later in the games the gamemakers decide that they will let two people from the same district win. Who will win the great prize of being the victor of the Hunger Games? Read this fast-paced and exciting book to find out.

The book, A Time For Dancing is a great read. It is by Davida Wills Hurwin. It is realistic fiction. In this book, Julie and Sam are best friends. They have been since they can remember. Now, they are seniors in high school. Julie and Sam dance together at the dance company. One day when they are dancing, Julie has terrible pain in her back and side. She goes to many, many doctors, but none seem to know what’s wrong with Julie. Finally, they go to another doctor, and she seems to know what’s going on. Julie has cancer, and it’s bad. Julie immediately starts chemo. She seems to be getting better, but who knows? She and Sam never see each other anymore because Julie is always sick and resting. They grow very far apart. After Julie quits treatment, though, to start a new treatment at a healing arts center, will she get better? Will she and Sam get back together? Will Julie be able to dance with Sam ever again? Read this book to find out. It is a great girl power and friendship book. Even if you don’t like girl power books, it would still be a good read for you. I certainly enjoyed it.

The book Uglies Scott Westerfield is a fast-paced science fiction novel that will keep you turning the pages. In this book, 15 year old Tally is longing to turn 16. It’s not because she wants to get a driver’s license, its because she wants to turn pretty. In Tally’s world, hundreds of years into the future, the age 16 comes with a surgery to turn you from ugly into stunningly pretty, where your only job is to really have fun. But when she meets Shay, her world is turned upside down. Shay’s not sure she wants to be pretty, she’d rather stay “ugly” forever. But when Shay runs away, Tally is forced to pick between turning in Shay to the authorities and not turning pretty at all. What will Tally’s decision be? Will she risk not turning pretty for her friend. Or did her high-tech world corrupt her so much? This is one of my all time favorite books, always shooting surprises out at you. If you're wanting more, you're in luck. This is the first in a fantastic series, Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras. If you love a book with surprises around every corner, this is the book for you. It is very well-written, and broken up well into three parts. I loved this book, and I know you will too.

Eli and his twin brother Eddy are best pals. Actually, they are the only pals either of them have. When a “nuclear explosion” is about to happen Eli goes into a remote area into a compound that his dad made, so he will be safe, but where’s Eddy and Grandma?? They aren’t in the compound, and it’s too late for Eli to go get Eddy and his grandma to bring them to safety. Soon, Eli is tricked into living a in a world that his dad is controlling. When Eli goes into Eddy’s bedroom in the compound, he finds the laptop that Eddy had. It has Internet on it, but it only connects at certain times. This gives Eli hope that he will someday communicate with the outside world, but then his dad finds Eli on the laptop and he takes it away. Eli starts to think that his being on the Internet was just a dream. I mean, everything was destroyed, right? I thought The Compound was a great book. It has many mysteries in it. Some, will shock you, and some won’t. There are a lot of twist and turns in this book, which makes it a fantastic read. I would recommend this book to anyone, boy or girl. This book is truly unbelievable.

What if you were a black maid living in Mississippi living in the 1960’s; can you imagine being bossed around all day by white folks, taking care of their children, cooking for them, and paid very very little?
One day a young 25-year-old journalist gets the idea to write about the maids life stories. Only there’s one problem; no white has every written a book about blacks, and this has horrible consequences for not only the maids, but also Skeeter, the journalist herself, if anyone finds out what these two groups of unlikely people are planning.
The Help by Kathryn Stockett blasts into the past of the 1960’s showing the tale of the lives of black maids in Mississippi, a 25 year journalist waiting for a big break and to be discovered, and white rich mothers who care nothing for blacks. Greatly written, The Help expresses many messages about how life used to be unfair and all its chaos. In my opinion, this is a great book that everyone should read. It dwells on many different topics that make you think deeply on things and ponder on how life has changed majorly since then.

I believe Things That Keep Us Here is a great book if you like apocalyptic books. It is very well written and has a very nice pace throughout the book. The pace then speeds up during climatic events. For a first time writing, Carla Barkley, is a fantastic writer.
It all starts out in Korea. The birds soon carry the bird influenza to the U.S. and many other places. A scientist soon discovers a pond full of dead birds, and he realizes that the flu has reached his town. He rushes to get a sample from the birds and the water, and races back to shore and back to his lab in a university. After that, they alert the authorities and the health association of the U.S. Soon everyone is on high alert, and the authorities tell everyone that they should stay in their houses. Then, everyone rushes to the store to get all the supplies they need. The mother of the scientist goes to the store and is held at gunpoint until she gives the man her cart full of necessary supplies to survive. She returns home to her daughter and her son. Will her family survive? Will the scientists researching this bird influenza ever find a cure? Read Things That Keep Us Here by Carla Buckley to find out.

In the book I'm reading by Pat Walsh, The Crowfield Curse, I find the setting interesting. The book is set during the middle ages in a medieval abbey with a creepy graveyard near it. And beyond the graveyard is a secret buried deep in the snow. The cold, snow, and secrets all add to the atmosphere of the book: something dangerous and deadly (a curse?!) is at play. This story reminds me of a classic horror story like Frankenstein.

Number the Stars by Lois Lowry is a historical fiction novel about the Holocaust. In the book Ellen, a Jew, moves in with another German family and pretends to be their daughter in order to save her from the Nazis. Amber likes that there's a little mystery involved in the book.

What I like about the start of my book, The Green Glass Sea, is the insight into the main character, Dewey. I can see right away that I am interested in seeing what will happen when she arrives in New Mexico to live with her father. She lived with her grandmother until her death and will now have to live with her father, an important military figure at Los Alamos, New Mexico.

I read The Smile by Donna Jo Napoli, a fictionalized biography of the young woman who posed for Leonardo da Vinci's The Mona Lisa. The book is a very tender portrait of a young woman who is forced into an arranged marriage when she loves another, and of course, it is also about posing for the famous painting as well. Well-written and researched, you'll feel like you have stepped back into the 16th century.
